Approximately 25% of worldwide CO2 emissions are produced by transportation means; 73% of these emissions are accounted to on-road transportation, which are based mainly on fossil fuels.

Biofuels, primarily from agricultural feedstocks, offer a feasible alternative for the transportation sector. During crop growth, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is reduced through photosynthesis (sequestration). Furthermore, the burning of biofuel generates considerably less CO2 emission than fossil fuels. The development of feedstock for biofuel requires new and advanced agro-technological know-how and efficient large-scale irrigation technologies in order to convert this energy source into a sustainable solution. This means minimizing water and energy inputs and maximizing yield and productivity.
